Monument

– Salisbury Cathedral

Curve of a path, weaves
through runic conifers set on snow.

Black lamp-posts with swan-like necks,
lozenges of Lucozade coloured light.

In the cool of the cathedral,
the horizontal marbled knight,
stone gauntlets clamped together
in eternal prayer, the locks of his eyes
conceal the key to a dream…

Indigo sky beyond
where a thousand doves
freeze in their flight,

suspended stars in the vaulted heaven.

As you turn to leave, the eyes flicker open.
